Given the limits of military intervention, the Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping (UCP) is emerging as an innovative, efficient and effective method. The UCP is based on the observation that, in some situations, the presence of unarmed civil actors, trained in accompaniment, interposition and mediation, can contribute to reduce the level of violence, reinforce the human rights defenders’ safety and encourage therefore the emergence of political solutions to the conflict.
Many missions of UCP have proved sucessful in Latin America, Europe and Asia. By working on the transformation of conflicts, the UCP contributes at the stabilization of an area and the building of States of Law, a necessary condition for sustainable development.
